I. The Peltier Effect: A “Heat Porter” Driven by Current Direction
Laser chips are extremely temperature sensitive — the emission wavelength of a DFB laser drifts with temperature, and temperature fluctuations also accelerate chip aging. To keep the chip “cool,” you need a TEC.
The TEC (thermoelectric cooler) works on the Peltier effect: when current passes through a junction of two semiconductors, one end absorbs heat and the other releases it — heat is “carried” from the cold side to the hot side. Reverse the current and the cold and hot sides swap.
A TEC consists of multiple semiconductor elements wired in series; cooling power can reach several watts, and paired with a temperature-control circuit it delivers precise temperature regulation.
II. The Temperature-Control System of BTF Butterfly Packages: Three Components Working in Concert
Temperature control in high-end optical modules is accomplished by three components working together:
TEC— mounted between the header and the chip mounting surface, it provides active cooling or heating and is the “engine” of the temperature-control system.
Thermistor (NTC)— mounted near the chip, it monitors junction temperature in real time.
External temperature-control circuit— reads the thermistor feedback and closed-loop regulates the TEC current, locking the chip temperature at the set point.
Xuri’s butterfly packages (BTF-30*12.7-S and the 8PIN and 14PIN series) all reserve mounting positions for the TEC and thermistor, and use a multi-pin layout to route the temperature-control signals out independently — one reason butterfly packages have far more pins than TO packages.
